Desktop shortcuts and bookmarks

Last updated 2026-05-15

Rundoo runs in the browser, so the fastest way to launch it at a register is a desktop shortcut or pinned bookmark — click and you're at your sign-in screen, no typing the URL. This page walks Chrome, Edge, and Safari setups.

Why bother

At a counter that runs Rundoo all day, every second of friction adds up: opening a browser, typing a tenant URL, finding the right tab. A pinned shortcut launches Rundoo in one click — same as opening any native app. Two flavors:

  • Desktop / taskbar shortcut — an icon that opens Rundoo from the desktop, taskbar, or Dock. Fastest to launch.

  • Bookmarks-bar bookmark — a one-click entry in the browser's bookmarks bar. Handy if Rundoo lives alongside other tabs you flip between.

Chrome on Windows or macOS

Desktop shortcut

  1. Open Chrome and navigate to your Rundoo tenant URL — your-store.rundoo.app.

  2. Sign in, or stay on the sign-in card — doesn't matter.

  3. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right of Chrome.

  4. Hover over Save & Share (or Cast, save, and share, depending on Chrome version).

  5. Click Create Shortcut.

  6. In the dialog that opens, name the shortcut Rundoo. Leave Open as window unchecked — the shortcut opens correctly that way.

  7. Click Create.

The shortcut lands on your desktop. Double-click to launch.

📂

Windows 11 — pin to taskbar. Right after creating the shortcut, Windows usually pops a notification asking whether to pin Rundoo to your taskbar. Click Yes — the icon stays in the taskbar so the next clerk can launch Rundoo without hunting for the desktop.

Bookmarks-bar bookmark

  1. Navigate to your Rundoo tenant in Chrome.

  2. Click the star icon on the right side of the address bar.

  3. If the bookmark settings don't show Bookmarks bar in the Folder dropdown, click Edit and pick Bookmarks bar.

  4. Click Done.

The Rundoo entry shows up on the bookmarks bar (View > Always Show Bookmarks Bar if it's hidden).

Microsoft Edge

Edge has its own "install as app" flow that creates a desktop shortcut and a taskbar pin in one go:

  1. Open Rundoo in Edge.

  2. Click the three-dot menu (top-right).

  3. Select Apps.

  4. Click Install this site as an app.

  5. Confirm Install.

  6. Edge offers pin/shortcut options: Pin to taskbar, Pin to Start, Create desktop shortcut — turn on whichever fit.

Rundoo opens in a windowed view that looks like a standalone app — no browser chrome cluttering the cart.

Safari on macOS

Safari doesn't expose a built-in "install as app" option, but a Dock shortcut still works:

  1. Open Rundoo in Safari.

  2. Click and drag the URL from the address bar to your Desktop. macOS creates a .webloc file.

  3. Rename it Rundoo if you want a cleaner name.

  4. Drag the .webloc file into your Dock (the right side, near the Downloads stack). Clicking it launches Rundoo in Safari.

💡

Safari power users: macOS Sonoma+ supports adding any site to the Dock as a web app via File > Add to Dock. Gives you a Chrome-style standalone-app launch without leaving Safari.

ChromeOS

ChromeOS treats every web app like a native app:

  1. Open Rundoo in Chrome.

  2. Three-dot menu > Save & Share > Install Rundoo… (if the option appears).

  3. The icon lands in the launcher, shelf, and desktop.

If the install option doesn't show, fall through to Create shortcut (same flow as Chrome on Windows/macOS above).

Tips for shared counters

  • Pin to taskbar / Dock, not just desktop. Stations get rebooted, screens get cleared, and a buried desktop icon is harder to find than a pinned shelf entry.

  • Use a clean name (Rundoo). Long, auto-generated names like your-store.rundoo.app — Sign in are noisy and hard to scan quickly.

  • Multiple tenants on one machine. If you run more than one store on the same computer, name each shortcut by tenant (Rundoo Menlo, Rundoo Palo Alto) so cashiers don't pick the wrong one.

  • Tablets get the same treatment. On iPad or Android tablets, see Mobile apps for the tablet equivalents.
