Browser and OS requirements

Last updated 2026-04-24

Rundoo is a web app — you run it in a browser, on whatever hardware your store already uses. This Rundoc covers what we officially support, what tends to work fine even if we haven't certified it, and what to avoid. When in doubt about hardware purchases — POS stations, receipt printers, card readers, label printers — call Rundoo Support and we'll point you at a setup that's known to work.

Supported browsers

Use Google Chrome. It's the browser we develop against, test against, and run on every demo machine. If you only remember one thing from this page, it's that Rundoo runs best in Chrome.

Also supported:

  • Microsoft Edge — modern Chromium-based Edge behaves like Chrome. Works well.

  • Safari (macOS / iPadOS) — supported for browsing, reporting, and most POS flows. If something looks off in Safari, try it in Chrome before calling it a bug.

Avoid:

  • Internet Explorer — not supported. Won't work.

  • Firefox — we don't actively test on Firefox. Most things work; some may not. Not recommended for the primary POS station.

Whatever browser you pick, keep it up to date. Rundoo ships updates continuously and relies on modern browser features. A browser that's two major versions behind will start to feel slow or break in subtle ways.

Supported operating systems

Rundoo runs inside a browser, so the OS matters less than the browser — but here's what our customers use day-to-day:

  • Windows 10 and Windows 11 — the most common setup at the counter. Works well with Chrome or Edge.

  • macOS — works well with Chrome or Safari. Common at smaller shops and for back-office staff.

  • iPadOS — works for tablet POS, reporting, and back-office use. See Mobile and tablet below for what to expect.

  • ChromeOS — works. Chrome is the native browser, so there's nothing to configure.

We don't officially certify specific minimum OS versions — if your machine runs a current version of Chrome, Edge, or Safari, Rundoo will run. Very old machines stuck on browsers that can't update are the usual source of trouble; see Staying current below.

Mobile and tablet

Rundoo's primary surface is a desktop browser — that's where cashiers run sales, receive orders, and do most admin work. But a few surfaces are designed to work on smaller screens:

  • Tablets (iPad, Android tablets) — full POS and admin work, with enough screen space to feel like a desktop. A good fit for mobile checkout, curbside, or a roving counter at a farm-and-feed store.

  • Phones — you can sign in and use Rundoo on a phone for quick lookups (a customer's balance, an order status, a product price). Running full sales from a phone is possible but cramped; we don't recommend it as your primary POS.

We don't ship a native mobile app — Rundoo is the same web app everywhere. You open it in the phone or tablet's browser (Chrome on Android, Safari on iPad / iPhone) and sign in.

Rundoo supports the common counter hardware categories — receipt printers, label printers, cash drawers, card readers, barcode scanners — but the specific models we've certified against change over time as vendors update firmware and new models come out. Rather than freeze a list here that will drift, call Rundoo Support before you buy. We'll tell you exactly what to order for your setup, including:

  • Receipt printer model and interface (USB vs network).

  • Label printer model, if you print shelf labels or product tags.

  • Cash drawer and how it connects to the receipt printer.

  • Card reader (Rundoo's card readers run through Stripe — see Stripe).

  • Barcode scanner — most USB scanners that "type" the scanned value work out of the box.

  • The POS computer itself — most off-the-shelf Windows PCs or Macs with 8 GB+ of RAM and Chrome installed are fine.

Two rules of thumb: get wired hardware when you can (Ethernet and USB beat Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for reliability at a busy counter), and keep one spare of anything the store can't run without.

Staying current

Rundoo improves every week, and those improvements assume you're running a current browser. If the app starts feeling slow, buttons stop responding, or a modal renders oddly:

  1. Update your browser. In Chrome, click the three-dot menu, then Help > About Google Chrome — it will check for and install updates. Restart the browser when prompted.

  2. Update the OS. A Windows or macOS that's years behind may hold back the browser too.

  3. Reload the page. Rundoo ships changes without you needing to do anything, but a browser that's been open for days may be running an older version of the app. A hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on macOS) picks up the latest.

If none of that fixes the issue, see Connectivity troubleshooting or Printer troubleshooting for the hardware-specific checks, then call Rundoo Support.
