Cost method is a preference for how Rundoo thinks about the unit cost of a product — either a running weighted average across your receipts, or a fixed standard cost saved on each product. Rundoo may use this preference in some reporting and margin displays.

In the Admin > Company tab, the Cost management section, pick which cost convention Rundoo applies.

<aside> ⚠️

This setting does not drive your accounting. COGS, your P&L, and every accounting report in Rundoo always reference the cost recorded on the receipt — not this toggle. If you need to change how your books value cost, that's a conversation with your bookkeeper, not a change here.

Average cost

Average cost is the default, and the right fit for most Rundoo companies. Each time you receive inventory, Rundoo recomputes a weighted average unit cost across the on-hand quantity and the new quantity. The product carries that blended number as its current unit cost.

The upside: it smooths out price volatility from your vendors. If paint base goes from $18 to $22 to $20 across three receipts, the product's tracked cost lands on a blended number rather than whipsawing with each batch. For paint, hardware, and farm & feed — where vendor prices move and receipts arrive often — this matches how owners actually think about cost.

Standard cost

Standard cost uses a fixed cost per product — the one saved on the product record — regardless of what you paid on any given receipt. The product carries that standard as its tracked cost, and receipts don't move it.

Use Standard cost only if your accounting team has told you to. It's a fit for companies that maintain cost per SKU as a deliberate decision (e.g. annual cost review) and want product cost to reflect that fixed number rather than a moving average.

Changing your cost method

<aside>

Changing your cost method changes how Rundoo tracks a product's unit cost going forward. It does not restate anything historically, and it does not change how your accounting books cost (that still comes from the receipt). Talk to your bookkeeper or accountant before changing this setting, and check with Rundoo Support at (650) 334-3205 if you're unsure.

To change the setting, open the dropdown and pick the other option. You'll see both choices — Average cost is highlighted as the current selection.

Tap Save to commit. If you change your mind before saving, tap Cancel.
